The Business Plan

Humble Origins Art Studio is being developed as more than a traditional art gallery. The goal is to create a welcoming, working studio and gallery space where local artists can create, show, sell, and grow — while also building a practical business model that allows the studio to sustain itself long after the initial launch.

The GoFundMe campaign is intended to help with the startup phase: securing a physical location, preparing the gallery and studio space, purchasing basic furnishings and display materials, setting up signage, and giving the studio enough early runway to open responsibly.

The long-term plan, however, is not to rely on donations.

The long-term plan is to build a self-supporting creative business that combines gallery sales, artist workspace rentals, solo exhibitions, small retail offerings, events, commissions, and community engagement.

Humble Origins Art Studio is designed to give new and emerging local artists support, visibility, and an affordable place to work — while still generating the revenue needed to keep the doors open.

Estimated Monthly Operating Costs

The actual cost of operating the studio would depend on the final location, square footage, lease terms, utilities, insurance, buildout needs, and business structure.

For planning purposes, Humble Origins Art Studio is using a modest commercial studio/gallery model of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 square feet.

Estimated monthly operating costs may include:

  • Studio/gallery rent $1,500 – $2,500

  • Utilities $500 – $1,200

  • Internet, phone, and payment systems $150 – $300

  • Business insurance $100 – $250

  • Website, email, and marketing tools $150 – $400

  • Gallery supplies, hanging systems, labels, packaging $200 – $500

  • Studio supplies and shared materials $200 – $500

  • Event and exhibition supplies$150 – $500

  • Cleaning, maintenance, and miscellaneous $200 – $500

Estimated Monthly Operating Need $3,150 – $6,650

The business model is being designed around the goal of consistently covering these costs through a combination of recurring and activity-based revenue.

How the Studio Could Support Itself

The strength of the Humble Origins Art Studio model is that it would not rely on a single source of revenue.

Original art sales are important, but they can vary from month to month. By combining several modest revenue streams, the studio has a better opportunity to remain stable.

The primary revenue streams would include:

  • Artist workspace rentals

  • Low gallery commissions

  • Paid solo exhibitions and featured artist events

  • Retail sales fees from small art products

  • Original artwork sales

  • Commissions and custom artwork

  • Workshops and small community events

Together, these streams create a more balanced and sustainable business model.

Humble Origins Art Studio would be supported through several modest but balanced revenue streams designed to keep the studio affordable for artists while still covering operating costs.

Estimated monthly revenue could include artist workspace rentals generating approximately $1,200–$2,100, low gallery commissions from local artist sales generating approximately $400–$1,600, solo exhibition and featured artist event fees generating approximately $500–$1,000, small retail product sales fees generating approximately $300–$1,000, original artwork sales by Kent Norton generating approximately $800–$2,000+, commissioned/custom artwork generating approximately $500–$3,000+, and workshops or community events generating approximately $500–$1,200.

Together, these funding streams could create an estimated monthly revenue range of approximately $4,200 on the conservative side to $8,700 or more in a stronger month, helping the studio move beyond launch funding and toward long-term operational sustainability.

Our Commitment

Humble Origins Art Studio will be built with care, practicality, and purpose.

The studio’s mission is to support local artists while also operating responsibly as a sustainable business. Every part of the plan is designed to balance affordability for artists with the real financial needs of running a physical creative space.

The goal is not to create an exclusive gallery.

The goal is to create an approachable, working studio where local art can be discovered, created, shared, and supported.

With the help of startup funding, Humble Origins Art Studio can begin with a strong foundation — and then grow into a self-supporting creative space that serves artists, collectors, and the community for years to come.

Humble Origins Art Studio begins with a simple idea:

Every artist starts somewhere.

Every collector discovers their first piece somewhere.

Every creative journey has humble origins.

This studio is being built to honor that beginning — and to create a place where local artists have the space, support, and visibility they need to grow.
